The Best Male Weightlifter on Earth is Back in Fighting Shape

Karlos Nasar will probably win the 2024 World Weightlifting Championships (WWC). Nasar, 20, won gold at the 2024 Olympics this summer, setting a few new world records in the process.

The 2024 WWC runs from Dec. 6 to 15 in Manama, Bahrain, and will also hold a meeting of the International Weightlifting Federation’s Congress to draft revised rules for the next Olympic qualification period.

At the tail end of November, Nasar signaled his intent to dominate Worlds by lifting a trio of unofficial world records in the 89-kilogram category at a weightlifting meet in Germany.

Karlos Nasar’s Latest Unofficial World Records

Nasar joined in on a meet at Bundesliga, a multi-sport athletic event – it’s unknown, if unlikely, whether he cut down to his standard 89-kilogram body weight. Regardless, Nasar appeared in top form and hit the following lifts:

  • Snatch: 185 kilograms (407.8 pounds)
  • Clean & Jerk: 230 kilograms (507 pounds)
  • Total: 415 kilograms (914.9 pounds)

If performed in an IWF-recognized international event at 89 kilograms, all three lifts would be new world records.

Karlos Nasar at the 2024 World Weightlifting Championships

At Worlds, Nasar is the expected favorite. But it’s not a sure thing for the Bulgarian, despite his five-win streak on the international stage. Nasar hasn’t lost a weightlifting meet since the 2022 European Championships – Antonino Pizzolato beat him there and wound up bagging bronze in Paris.

Pizzolato won’t be at Worlds this year, but Team North Korea will, including pursuer Ro Kwang Hyol who entered with a 385-kilogram declared Total, just five below Nasar’s.

Nasar is the strongest weightlifter in his category by a comfortable margin – if he matches his Bundesliga effort on the World stage, it’s game over.
