How to Shrink Fibroids

Can You Shrink Fibroids Naturally?

Diet

Diet alone is unlikely to shrink fibroids, especially if they are not already shrinking. However, while more research is needed, several studies indicate that a diet rich in fiber, antioxidants, and lean protein sources may help prevent fibroids or slow their growth.

Foods that may reduce or slow fibroid growth include:

  • Fruits and vegetables, particularly leafy greens, citrus fruits, and potassium-rich fruits such as avocado and bananas
  • Lean meats (such as chicken)
  • Legumes (including beans, peas, and lentils)
  • Fatty fish (such as salmon and mackerel)
  • Green tea

If you experience fibroids, consider speaking to your healthcare provider or a dietician about trying the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet incorporates several foods, such as legumes, seafood, and high-fiber foods, that may slow or prevent fibroid growth.

Exercise

Exercise won’t reduce the size of any existing fibroids, but studies show that regular physical activity can help maintain a healthy hormonal balance and potentially prevent fibroid development. Exercise also releases endorphins (feel-good hormones) that may help reduce fibroid-related pain.

Plant-Based Remedies

While there is little evidence to support methods to shrink fibroids naturally, some plant-based remedies may limit fibroid growth and decrease the risk of developing new fibroids.

Hormonal Shifts That May Shrink Fibroids

The sex hormones estrogen and progesterone play a role in the development and growth of fibroids. Hormonal shifts caused by pregnancy and menopause may reduce fibroid size.

Pregnancy

Estrogen levels rise significantly during pregnancy. As a result, fibroids may grow or develop during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester. However, fibroids often shrink after giving birth. Research shows that 70% of people who were pregnant and gave birth experienced a more than 50% reduction in fibroid size.

Menopause

During menopause, the body produces less estrogen and progesterone. The drop in hormone levels reduces the risk of developing fibroids and may help pre-existing fibroids shrink.

Summary

Fibroids are noncancerous growths that commonly develop in the uterus during childbearing. Fibroids don’t always cause symptoms, but larger fibroids may cause pain, discomfort, and dangerously heavy periods that affect your quality of life.

A healthy diet may prevent fibroid development and growth but will not shrink existing fibroids. Some home remedies may help manage fibroid symptoms. Prescription medications, surgeries, and specialist-driven procedures such as uterine fibroid embolization are the most effective methods of shrinking fibroids.
