Dance Moms star Kelly Hyland, 53, has revealed that she has been diagnosed with ‘fast-moving’ breast cancer – just months after she had a ‘clean mammogram.’
Kelly, who appeared in Dance Moms with her daughters, Brooke and Paige, from 2011 until 2014, shared the heartbreaking news with E! News on Wednesday morning.
She explained that she first started to suspect that something was wrong after she suddenly lost a significant amount of weight, despite her not making any changes to her day-to-day life.
‘The first red flag was my significant weight loss,’ she told the publication.
‘I lost enough that others noticed and would ask for my dieting hacks, but there was nothing I had changed in my day-to-day to cause the loss.’

Then, in late March, the mom-of-three said she noticed a lump in her breast and decided to get it checked – despite having had a mammogram just eight months prior.
‘I had just had one done eight months prior and the results came back clean,’ she continued.
‘However, this new mammogram and sonogram did not, it came back showing a mass.’
She then got a biopsy, and doctors told her that she had invasive carcinoma grade three.
‘I went from clean results to a malignant mass in eight months,’ the reality star said.
‘I was shocked that it had grown that quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face.’
She’s currently undergoing the second of six initial chemotherapy treatments. After those are complete, she will have to get surgery, radiation, and 11 more chemo rounds.
Kelly recalled breaking the heartbreaking news to her kids, daughters Brooke, 26, and Paige, 23, and son Josh, 24, whom she shares with ex-husband Randy Hyland.

She told them over a ‘four-way call’ because they were in Pittsburg at the time while she was in Florida.
‘As soon as she told us the bad news, I felt like I was in shock and then quickly hit with a whirlwind of emotions,’ Paige said.
‘Not only was I scared, I was angry, sad, and confused why this would happen to someone as amazing as my mother.’
Brooke, who pointed out that they previously lost their grandmother to cancer, added that she ‘hated’ knowing she would have to ‘watch another important person in her life go through it.’
Josh said they’re trying to remain ‘hopeful,’ explaining, ‘I feel like she caught it quickly. I know my mom is strong enough to get through this.’
Brooke agreed, ‘She is the strongest woman I know and I am confident that she will come out on top of this and I will be there every step of the way. She has so much love and support in her corner.’
‘As much as I wish I could take away her pain and cure her from this horrible situation, the only thing I [have] the power to do is be there for her the same way she’s been there for me my whole life,’ Paige said.
‘This is going to be a long, challenging year, but if anyone can kick cancer’s butt, I’m confident it’s my mom.’
To avoid losing her hair, Kelly is using a scalp cooling system called Amma during her chemo treatments.
‘It cools the scalp to a low temperature so that the blood vessels contract, reducing the blood flow to the hair follicles,’ she revealed.
‘This limits the amount of chemo drugs to the hair follicles and reduces hair loss. Let’s hope it works.’

The two got into a physical altercation after Kelly claimed Abby wasn’t giving her daughters the same amount of attention as some of the other girls on the team
Kelly told the outlet that ‘all of her former Dance Mom costars are aware’ of her diagnosis and have been ‘extremely supportive.’
She said she has no plans to put her Back to the Barre or Dear Dance Mom… podcasts on hold, the latter of which she cohosts with fellow Dance Mom alums Melissa Gisoni, Holly Frazier, and Jill Vertes.
The star, who is getting her treatment in Pittsburgh and staying with her older sister Carrie Matarazzo, is also in the midst of helping her daughter Brooke plan her upcoming wedding, and she said she won’t let her diagnosis get in the way.
Brooke got engaged to account manager Brian Thalman earlier this month.
‘Planning the wedding is going to be a great distraction – I plan to help with every detail to ensure it turns out to be her dream wedding,’ Kelly dished.
‘I may not look or feel my best, but nothing is going to stop me from helping and watching my little girl walk down the aisle.’
